Ismael's Blog

About me

Hello, world! I'm Ismael Pérez Nieves, a passionate Game Designer that plays, creates, talks about and breathes video games. Since I stole away the PlayStation 2 my father bought for himself, video games have always been a part of my life. After more than 20 years being a gamer, I was ready to jump into the video game industry and give back everything they gave me.

As a Game Designer, I specialize in Mechanic and System Design, but I also have great experience designing levels. However, I am always focusing on User Experience on every step in the process. I am always the biggest fan of my teammates' craft and a team player, so I have taken on my duty to work alongside them to understand what they intend to do and invest my efforts on translating that to the experience so that everyone can see it too.

I have been studying and working on many things that now define who I am right now. In my 2 years of experience as a Software Engineer I learnt about business culture and organization skills, plus developing flexibility in my programming skills that let me create prototypes that serve as proofs of concept and documentation for my teammates. My studies as a Data Analyst grant me knowledge on how to study user behaviour using data gathered by metrics design and testing, which greatly helps me to understand how my users play my game and improve my designs. I am always learning and trying new things, and I'm not scared to jump into the next challenge.

I am currently working with Infinite Thread Games with its upcoming game Hidalgo, a cozy narrative-adventure game based on "Don Quijote de la Mancha"; as well as participating in many Game Jams working alongside multidisciplinar teams to keep improving my skills. In my not-so-free time, I also collaborate in the online video game magazine NaviGames, where I analyze video games and interview big names of the industry.

My Skills and Experience

The main adjectives that describe me are collaborative, proactive and creative. I am always focusing on creating a satisfying and quality experiences working alongside my teammates and understanding player behaviour at its core. Thanks to my experience as a Software Developer, I have great programming experience that not only helps me communicate with the development team, but also take the lead and create useful prototypes.

I am currently collaborating in an upcoming game called Hidalgo, where I take the role of Game Designer to design levels and mechanics based on a historical novel, create useful documentation to communicate my ideas to the team and aid in the marketing campaign. During Game Jams, I focus on Game Programming having great proficiency in Unity and Unreal.

My main skills are:

  • Game Design Documentation (GDDs, LDDs, Notion)
  • Prototyping (Unity, Unreal, Godot)
  • User Behaviour Analysis (PowerBI, Excel, A-B testing)
  • Mockups (Miro, Figma, PureRef)
